Research and Empathy: Writing Across Cultures
More than 90% of children’s book creators are white and more than 50% of young readers are not white. Children need to see their own lives on the page at least some of the time and the need for books with characters of all racial and ethnic backgrounds has never been greater. Yet many writers are reluctant to write outside the comforts of their home culture. This workshop will help you find both the concrete tools to research culture well and the empathy to find where your own cultural experience intersects with your characters
