Writing Workshops for Children and Teens

Rosanne Parry School visit

3-8 Writing the Wild 45-60 min. This workshop is ideal for students who are familiar with A Horse Named Sky, A Wolf Called Wander, and A Whale of the Wild. It covers the research process including some techniques for immersing yourself in an animal character. It integrates several STEM topics alongside the practical advice for creating a plot for a story. The group will do a story plotting game with options for classroom follow up. It is perfect for students in the middle of a creative writing unit.

5-8 The Big Bad Wolf is a workshop for older readers which takes a social and historical look at wolves in world culture. We will discuss why wolves are feared in some cultures and honored in others. Students will learn about on how culture is reflected in stories, drawing from folk and fairy tales. And how popular perception of an animal is not always rooted in data. This covers learning objectives in the social sciences for 5-8th grades.

Rosanne Parry School Visit

All ages Family Literacy Night, 60-90 min. This is a Writing Family Stories program which gets families talking and sharing the stories that shape their own family history. It can include time for a Q & A, a short reading and book signing.

Writer in Residence I have done a number of writer in residence programs and it’s by far my favorite kind of school visit and tends to have the most long lasting effects on students writing. Please inquire if you want a school-changing experience.
